What is a Bailiff ?

A bailiff  is a sworn judicial officer who serves judicial or extra-judicial documents, executes court orders and rulings from various courthouses, and exercice any other functions assigned to him.

A permit from the Chamber of bailiff of Québec is needed in order for the bailiff to practice. The permit is renewable each year on the 1st of April, same date as the annual subscription to the order.

The Code of Civil Procedure has been reworked and came into effect on September 15th 2015. It now allows bailiff officers to act as a mediator or interrogate people in order to shorten up the delay of procedures.
